of 12 May 2026

of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION,
Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,
Having regard to Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April 2024 on
geographical indications for wine, spirit drinks and agricultural products, as well as traditional specialities guaranteed and
optional quality terms for agricultural products, amending Regulations (EU) No 1308/2013, (EU) 2019/787 and
(EU) 2019/1753 and repealing Regulation (EU) No 1151/2012(1), and in particular Article 21(1) thereof,
Whereas:
(1) Pursuant to Article 15(1) of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143, the Commission has examined the application for
registration of the name ‘Geyve Ayvası’ (PDO-TR-03283) as protected designation of origin (PDO), submitted by
Sakarya Commodity Exchange (Türkiye) on 11 July 2024.
(2) Following the examination of the application for registration, on 20 September 2024, the Commission
communicated its observations, highlighting deficiencies in the application, in particular as regards the applicant,
the product description, the proof of origin, the specific rules on packaging and labelling, and the connection with
the geographical area. The applicant was requested to provide adjustments and clarifications.
(3) The applicant did not respond.
(4) On 8 July 2025, the Commission informed the applicant of its intention to launch the procedure for the adoption of
a formal Commission decision rejecting the application pursuant to Article 21(1) of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143,
unless a revised application was submitted, or the application was withdrawn.
(5) Non-conformities mentioned in the letter of 8 July 2025 concerned the status of the Sakarya Commodity Exchange
as an applicant. In particular, the Commission indicated that the requirements set out in Article 14(2) of Regulation
(EU) 2024/1143 are not respected. The application as submitted to the Commission, does not demonstrate that the
Sakarya Commodity Exchange is a producer group which is composed of members that work with the product, the
name of which is proposed for registration.
(6) The applicant neither provided comments nor requested the withdrawal of the application within the stipulated two-
month period following receipt of the letter.
(7) In the light of the above, the Commission considers that the application for registration of ‘Geyve Ayvası’ as PDO
does not fulfil the requirements of Article 14(2) of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143.
(8) The application for protection of the name ‘Geyve Ayvası’ as PDO should therefore be rejected.
(9) The measures provided for in this Decision are in accordance with the opinion of the Quality Policy Committee for
agricultural products, wine and spirit drinks,
