Executive Summary & Key Takeaways

**Policy Summary: Temporary Prohibition of Redfish Fishing in NAFO 3M Area** Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/652, enacted on April 23, 2018, establishes a temporary prohibition of directed fishing activities for redfish (Sebastes spp.) in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Division 3M area by vessels flying the flag of or registered in any Member State of the European Union. This regulation is based on the Council Regulation (EC) No 1224/2009, which establishes a Union control system for ensuring compliance with the rules of the common fisheries policy. The prohibition was implemented because available information indicated that EU vessels had exhausted their allocated midterm quota for redfish in the NAFO 3M area for the period before July 1, 2018. Consequently, directed fishing for redfish (identified by the code REDN3M) by EU-flagged vessels in this zone was prohibited from March 22, 2018, until June 30, 2018, inclusive. The regulation entered into force on the day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and is binding in its entirety and directly applicable in all Member States. The enacting authority for this regulation is the European Commission, represented by Joo Aguiar Machado, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
