Ministry of Mines 176th Foundation Day of Geological Survey of India, Central Region, Nagpur celebrated Posted On: 16 MAR 2026 8:31PM by PIB Mumbai Nagpur, 16 March 2026 Geological Survey of India, Central Region, Nagpur celebrated 176th Foundation Day of Geological Survey of India with great fanfare on 16th March 2026 under the Chairmanship of Shri D. V. Ganvir, Addl. Director General, and Head of the Department, GSI, Central Region. Major General Shri Navtej Singh Sohal, SM, General Commanding Officer Uttar Maharashtra and Gujrat sub Area graced the occasion as Chief Guest in the august presence of Shri Rabindra Nath Padhi, Dy. Director General (Retd.) as the Guest of Honour. The programme commenced with lighting of ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries and recitation of Ganesh Vandana by lady officers of GSI, Central Region. Cake cutting was done by the dignitaries on the occasion of foundation day and distributed amongst the participants. Shri D. V. Ganvir, Addl. Director General and Head of the Department welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour and all guests and employees of GSI, Central Region. He highlighted the achievement of the department on this occasion and mentioned the contribution of GSI in the field of mineral resources and its role in taking up geological studies in societal issues. He emphasized upon the role of a geoscientist of GSI who dispenses duties in very challenging situations in inhospitable terrain conditions with unwavering positive mindset. Shri Ganvir expressed earnest endeavor to make provision of all kinds of technical and logistic support to the ground level workers who in turn keeps the flag of GSI flying high. Shri R. N Padhi, Dy. Director General (Retd.) and Guest of Honour, congratulated one and all for completing 175 successful years of GSI since its inception in the year 1851. He expressed his reminiscences his experience while working in GSI as a young geologist in a totally differenttime period and wished many more successful years of GSI continuing its contribution for development of the nation. Chief Guest of the occasion Major General Shri Navtej Singh Sohal, SM, General Commanding Officer Uttar Maharashtra and Gujrat expressed his great delight in attending the foundation day of an organization like GSI, and expressed that, GSI’s contribution in economic development of the country may surpass any other organization. He emphasized upon the role of GSI in putting the country in a self-sufficient position the con-current geopolitical scenario by its continued endeavor in the field of search and identification of critical minerals. He applauded the department for its continued efforts in the various geological domains not only on land but also along its vast coastline and EEZ through maritime surveys, airborne surveys and delving into the field of search of critical minerals making the best utilization of the huge data by applying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning processes. Retired officers of GSI, like, Dr D. M. Mohabey, Dy. DG (Retd.), Shri N. V. Nitnaware, Addl. DG (Retd.) expressed their pleasure in attending the foundation day celebration of GSI at GSI, Central Region. Shri Rajesh Kumar, Chief Engineer, CPWD congratulated all for this occasion and wished for many more years of glory in the chapters of GSI in the coming days. Chief Guest and Guest of Honour and other dignitaries present during the function made a visit to the Museum Central Region and had shown keen interest about the exhibits like fossils and various rocks and minerals. Shri D. V. Ganvir, Addl. Director General and Head of the Department later interacted with the representatives of various media houses regarding present-day activities of GSI particularly in the field of mineral exploration of critical minerals in Central Region and also role of GSI in societal issues like earthquake related studies taken up by GSI in various part of Maharashtra. Mrs Kshipra N. Meshram, Director, Policy Support System made the welcome speech and conducted the proceedings of the foundation day celebration function at the beginning and Mrs Mohini M.
