Rice: About 405.10 lakh ha area coverage under rice has been reported as compared to 418.29 lakh ha
during the corresponding period of last year, showing a decrease of 13.19 lakh ha. The major decrease
in area coverage has been reported in Karnataka (3.09 lakh ha), Telangana (2.45 lakh ha), Jharkhand
(1.88 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (1.75 lakh ha), Odisha (1.63 lakh ha), Maharashtra (1.50 lakh ha),
Andhra Pradesh (1.26 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (1.18 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.70 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.27
lakh ha), etc.. Higher area coverage has been reported in Assam (2.80 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.36 lakh
ha)etc. Overall, the decline in rice area is mainly attributable to substantial reductions reported in
Karnataka, Telangana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra.Pulses: About 113.63 lakh ha area coverage under pulses has been reported as compared to 112.14 lakh
ha during the corresponding period of last year, showing an increase of 1.49 lakh ha. The major
increase in area coverage has been reported in Uttar Pradesh (3.97 lakh ha), Telangana (0.80 lakh ha),
Jharkhand (0.75 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.57 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.52 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh
(0.38 lakh ha) etc.. On the other hand, major decreases have been reported in Maharashtra (2.60 lakh
ha), Karnataka (2.22 lakh ha), Odisha (0.77 lakh ha) etc.. Overall, the increase in pulses area is mainly
attributable to substantial gains in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand and Rajasthan, which more than
offset the decline reported in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Odisha.
Shree Anna & Coarse Cereals: About 176.36 lakh ha area coverage under Shree Anna & Coarse
Cereals has been reported as compared to 179.81 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year,
showing a decrease of 3.45 lakh ha. The major decrease in area coverage has been reported in
Karnataka (6.57 lakh ha), Maharashtra (2.53 lakh ha), Haryana (0.59 lakh ha), Telangana (0.34 lakh
ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.39 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.27 lakh ha) etc.. Higher area coverage has been
reported in Rajasthan (2.75 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (1.46 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.80 lakh ha),
Odisha (0.70 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.63 lakh ha), Bihar (0.72 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.33 lakh ha) etc.
Overall, the decline in area is mainly attributable to substantial reductions in Karnataka and
Maharashtra, which have more than offset the gains recorded in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya
Pradesh, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh.
Oilseeds: About 188.37 lakh ha area coverage under oilseeds has been reported as compared to 188.69
lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year, showing a decrease of 0.32 lakh ha. The major
decrease in area coverage has been reported in Rajasthan (2.45 lakh ha), Gujarat (1.03 lakh ha),
Maharashtra (0.42 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.30 lakh ha), etc. The higher area coverage has been reported
in Uttar Pradesh (2.91 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (1.14 lakh ha) etc. Overall, the marginal decline in
oilseed area is mainly attributable to substantial reductions in Rajasthan and Gujarat, which have
largely offset the gains recorded in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Sugarcane: About 58.44 lakh ha area coverage under sugarcane has been reported as compared to
58.87 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year, showing a decrease of 0.43 lakh ha. The
major decrease in area coverage has been reported in Bihar (0.30 lakh ha) Uttarakhand (0.20 lakh ha),
Maharashtra (0.14 lakh ha), etc.. Higher area coverage has been reported in Uttar Pradesh (0.36 lakh
ha), Haryana (0.21 lakh ha), etc. Overall, the decline in sugarcane area is mainly attributable to
reductions in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, which have more than
offset the gains recorded in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Jute & Mesta: About 6.34 lakh ha area coverage under Jute & Mesta has been reported as compared to
6.23 lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year, showing an increase of 0.10 lakh ha. The
major increase in area coverage has been reported in Bihar (0.11 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.06 lakh ha)
etc. On the other hand, a decrease in area coverage has been reported in Assam (0.07 lakh ha) and
Andhra Pradesh (0.01 lakh ha), while area coverage remained largely unchanged in other States.
Overall, the increase in Jute & Mesta area is mainly attributable to higher coverage in Bihar and West
Bengal, which more than offset the decline reported in Assam.Cotton: About 108.45 lakh ha area coverage under cotton has been reported as compared to 108.73
lakh ha during the corresponding period of last year, showing a decrease of 0.28 lakh ha. The major
decrease in area coverage has been reported in Rajasthan (1.06 lakh ha), Haryana (0.90 lakh ha), Punjab
(0.43 lakh ha) etc. Higher area coverage has been reported mainly in Telangana (1.32 lakh ha), Gujarat
(0.67 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.14 lakh ha) etc. Overall, the marginal decline in cotton area is mainly
attributable to substantial reductions in Rajasthan and Haryana, which have largely offset the gains
recorded in Telangana and Gujarat.
