A two-day Brainstorming Workshop on “Solid Waste Management and Circular
Economy: A Path towards Viksit Bharat” was successfully organized at CSIR–
National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), Nagpur, on 8–
9 January 2026.The workshop was held under the leadership of Dr. Venkata Mohan, Director, CSIR-
NEERI, and Dr. Sunil Kumar, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEERI, with the
objective of fostering integrated, science-based, and policy-aligned approaches to
sustainable waste management in India.The inaugural session was graced by eminent dignitaries including Dr. Prem Lal
Patel, Director, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, Dr.
Govind Pandey, Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology (MMMUT),
Gorakhpur, and Dr. Kailash C. Petkar, Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research (DSIR).
The Chief Guest, Dr. Indra Prasad Tripathi, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Raja Shankar
Shah University, Chhindwara, emphasized the critical role of circular economy
principles in addressing environmental challenges while promoting inclusive and
sustainable development.Speakers underlined the urgency of aligning scientific innovation with policy
frameworks to meet national sustainability goals.
The workshop received generous support from the Department of Scientific and
Industrial Research (DSIR), Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF),
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Council of Scientific and Industrial
Research (CSIR), GMET International, LAHS Green India Private Limited, Bhumi
Green Energy, and PadCare, reflecting strong multi-stakeholder commitment
towards circular waste solutions.
A key highlight of the event was the launch of three important knowledge products:
the Vulnerability Assessment Report “From Margins to Mainstream: Integrating the
Informal Waste Sector into India’s Solid Waste Management”, the “E-WASTE CARE”
Resource Kit on Environmentally Sound Management of E-Waste, and the book
“Waste to Wealth towards Circular Economy”, reinforcing the focus on inclusive and
resource-efficient waste management.
Technical sessions on the first day addressed policy and legal frameworks, waste
and climate change linkages, landfilling, circularity, and waste-to-energy pathways.
The second day focused on composting and vermicomposting, public–privatepartnership models, resource recovery, systems modelling and optimization, and the
social, economic, and environmental benefits of effective waste management.
The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from leading academic institutions,
research organizations, government bodies, and industry representatives from
across the country. Overall, the deliberations provided a holistic platform for
actionable dialogue, with a collective resolve to translate recommendations into
future research, development, and implementation initiatives. It was also
announced that the second part of the workshop will be organized soon to further
advance outcomes towards a circular economy and Viksit Bharat.
