On November 14, 2025, in Dehradun, the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals (DCPC), along with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET), organized a summit on Recycling, Plastic Waste Management and Circular Economy in the Petrochemicals and Plastics Sector.
The summit's objective was to encourage dialogue and collaboration to create a sustainable and circular roadmap for India's petrochemical and plastics industries. Ms. Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary, DCPC, spoke about government initiatives such as the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) framework, the National Mission for Green India, the BioE3 Policy, strengthened Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) norms, the Plastic Waste Management Rules, and NITI Aayog's Waste to Wealth programme. She emphasized the role of CIPET and the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) in fostering a sustainable ecosystem.
Mr. Prabh Das, Chair, FICCI Petrochemicals & Plastics Committee, emphasized the importance of strengthening waste collection and recycling. Mr. Arvind Mehta, Chairman, All India Plastics Manufacturers' Association (AIPMA), advocated for public awareness and highlighted the potential of plastic exports. Mr. Nitesh Sharma, Partner, BCG, spoke on India's progress in achieving global circularity standards through EPR, and Shri Deepak Mishra, Joint Secretary (Petrochemicals), DCPC, discussed accelerating pathways and resource recovery. The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals (DCPC), in collaboration with the Federation
of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Central Institute of
Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET), organized a Summit on Recycling, Plastic
Waste Management and Circular Economy in the Petrochemicals and Plastics Sector in Dehradun
today.
The Summit aimed to promote dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders to develop a
sustainable and circular roadmap for India’s petrochemical and plastics industries. The initiative
aligns with the national goals of environmental protection and responsible development.
Delivering the keynote address, Ms. Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary, Department of Chemicals
and Petrochemicals, highlighted major government initiatives including the Carbon Capture,
Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) framework, the National Mission for Green India, the BioE3
Policy, strengthened Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) norms, the Plastic Waste
Management Rules, and NITI Aayog’s Waste to Wealth programme.
She underscored the pivotal role of institutions such as CIPET and the Indian Institute of
Petroleum (IIP) in advancing cleaner technologies and fostering industry–academia linkages for a
sustainable petrochemical ecosystem. Ms. Verma emphasized the need for faster adoption of
circular manufacturing practices, innovation-led recycling technologies, and global best practices
to ensure a greener and competitive future for the sector.Addressing the Summit, Mr. Prabh Das, Chair, FICCI Petrochemicals & Plastics Committee,
stressed the importance of strengthening waste collection and recycling mechanisms. Mr. Arvind
Mehta, Chairman, All India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association (AIPMA), called for greater
public awareness to encourage responsible consumer behavior and highlighted the growing
potential of plastic exports from India.
Mr. Nitesh Sharma, Partner, BCG, emphasized on India’s progress in achieving global circularity
standards through effective EPR implementation, while Shri Deepak Mishra, Joint Secretary
(Petrochemicals), DCPC, shared insights on accelerating circular petrochemical pathways and
enhancing resource recovery through innovation and industry partnerships.
The inaugural session was also graced by Dr. Geeta Khanna, Chairperson, FICCI Ladies
Organization, Uttarakhand and other senior officials from the industry.
The Summit served as a platform for meaningful engagement among policymakers, industry
leaders, and academia, reaffirming collective responsibility towards building a sustainable and
