Ministry of Finance DGTS Mumbai Organises GST Awareness Seminar for Students at Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Powai प्रव तथ: 04 AUG 2026 5:28PM by PIB Mumbai Mumbai : 4 August 2026 The Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS), Mumbai Zonal Unit, organised a seminar on "Understanding Basics of GST" at Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Powai, to promote tax literacy among school students and create awareness about the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The initiative aimed to help students understand the importance of taxation in nation building, economic development and responsible citizenship. The programme commenced with the felicitation of Shri B.K. Behra, Deputy Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Mumbai Region; Shri Sumit Mehra, Assistant Commissioner, KVS, Mumbai Region; and Shri Vinod Wankhede, Principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya, IIT Powai for their continued support in promoting taxpayer awareness among students. Certificates and GST awareness books were also distributed to the winners and participants of GST Day competitions, including Essay Writing, Poster Making and Slogan Writing. The GST Day awareness video released by CBIC was screened during the programme. Addressing the students, Shri Sumit Kumar, Principal Additional Director General, DGTS, Mumbai Zonal Unit, highlighted GST as a landmark economic reform and explained how taxes contribute to public welfare and national development. He encouraged students to learn about taxation through practical examples and explore career opportunities in taxation and public administration. Shri B.K. Behra emphasised the importance of introducing tax awareness at an early age and appreciated the continued collaboration between Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and DGTS in promoting educational and taxpayer awareness programmes.The technical session was conducted by Dr. Chandrakant V. Kedar, Joint Director, DGTS, Mumbai Zonal Unit, who explained the fundamentals of GST, including its objectives, benefits, GST rates, Input Tax Credit and taxpayer services through an interactive presentation using simple day-to-day examples. The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and teachers, reflecting DGTS's continued commitment to strengthening taxpayer education and voluntary tax compliance through outreach programmes.
