In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue
Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, has foiled two separate drug smuggling attempts at
Mumbai Airport and seized a total of 2.659 kg of cocaine valued at approximately
₹13.295 crore in the illicit market. Two persons have been arrested under the
provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted a female passenger arriving
from Addis Ababa. During the examination of her baggage, officers recovered eight
pouches containing liquid cocaine. A total of 1.575 kg of liquid cocaine, valued at
around ₹7.875 crore in the illicit market, was seized.In another operation, an African male passenger arriving at Mumbai Airport was
intercepted by DRI officers. During examination, it was found that the passenger
had ingested capsules containing cocaine. The passenger later purged a total of 70
capsules, from which 1.084 kg of cocaine valued at approximately ₹5.42 crore was
recovered.The seized contraband was confiscated under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985,
and both accused persons were arrested.
Further investigation is underway to identify and dismantle the wider network
involved in international drug trafficking.
The DRI reiterated its commitment towards building a “Nasha Mukt Bharat” by
continuing strict enforcement action against narcotics smuggling and international
trafficking syndicates to safeguard public health and national security.
