Key Points / Main Content

Current Coverage and Statistics

  • As of June 30, 2026, a total of 1,014 JAKs are operational in West Bengal.
  • Out of these, 715 JAKs are spread across 217 development blocks.
  • The highest concentrations of centers are located in North 24 Parganas (203), Kolkata (162), Hooghly (109), and Howrah (109).

Identified Coverage Gaps

  • Out of the 345 total blocks in the State, 128 blocks (approximately 37%) do not have any Jan Aushadhi Kendra.
  • Districts with minimal coverage include Kalimpong (2 centers) and Dakshin Dinajpur (2 centers).
  • Annexure-III provides a comprehensive list of all 128 uncovered blocks, including specific areas in Bankura, Birbhum, and Purulia.

Expansion Status and Implementation

  • The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) is the official implementing agency for the project.
  • There is a plan for the expansion of 469 new JAKs in the State.
  • The PMBI has reported that, to date, no formal proposal has been received from the Government of West Bengal to initiate this expansion.

Impact Analysis

Stakeholder: Government of West Bengal Impact The State currently has a significant service gap, with 128 blocks lacking access to affordable medicines under the PMBJP scheme. The expansion of 469 new centers is currently stalled at the administrative level. Action Required The State Government must prepare and submit a formal proposal to the PMBI to facilitate the expansion of the 469 new Jan Aushadhi Kendras.

Stakeholder: Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) Impact As the implementing agency, the PMBI is unable to proceed with the planned expansion or address the uncovered blocks without official coordination and proposals from the state authorities. Action Required The PMBI must continue to monitor the status of the 128 uncovered blocks and coordinate with state officials to receive the necessary expansion proposals.

Stakeholder: Residents of Uncovered Blocks Impact Citizens living in the 128 identified blocks across districts like Alipurduar, Bankura, and Cooch Behar do not have local access to the generic medicines provided by JAKs. Action Required While no direct action is mandated for residents, their access to the scheme is dependent on the submission of the expansion proposal by the State Government.
