Key Points / Main Content

Fire Safety at Railway Stations

  • Equipment: Stations are equipped with portable fire extinguishers and buckets containing sand and water.
  • Infrastructure: Automatic fire alarms are installed in relay and electronic interlocking rooms at major stations; large stations also feature passenger luggage scanning and water storage for emergencies.
  • Preventative Measures: Regular audits of electrical installations and the use of Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) prevent short circuits. Flame-based cooking is strictly prohibited on platforms.
  • Communication: Public address systems guide evacuations, and station masters have dedicated control phones to disconnect overhead power supplies if necessary.

Train Coach Safety Measures

  • Suppression Systems: Every coach contains at least two fire extinguishers, while pantry and power cars are equipped with water-mist fire extinguishers and automated suppression systems.
  • Material Standards: Coaches utilize global-standard fire-retardant materials for seats, berths, flooring, insulation, and electrical E-beam cables.
  • Emergency Features: Coaches include emergency evacuation windows and "Fire Notices" detailing safety protocols. Vande Bharat trains feature four Emergency Talk Back Units and four alarm buttons per coach.
  • Electrical Protection: Circuits are protected by fuses, MCBs, and Aerosol-based suppression systems in electrical cabinets.

Emergency Response and Disaster Management

  • Relief Network: The system includes 177 Accident Relief Trains (ARTs), 100 high-capacity breakdown cranes, and 170 "hospital on wheels" Medical Relief Units (ARME Scale-I).
  • Assistance Tools: Passengers can access emergency assistance through the integrated Rail Madad helpline (139).
  • Protocols: Established communication channels ensure immediate coordination with the NDRF, SDRF, fire brigades, and local police.

Staff Training and Preparedness

  • Specialized Training: Frontline staff, including Loco Pilots and Station Managers, undergo mandatory training in firefighting, first aid, and disaster management at the Indian Railways Institute of Disaster Management (IRIDM).
  • Operational Readiness: Regular mock drills are conducted across divisions—such as Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar—to test the effectiveness of rescue agencies.

Impact Analysis

Stakeholder: Passengers Impact Passengers benefit from enhanced on-board safety features, clearer evacuation routes, and rapid access to medical aid and emergency communication tools like the 139 helpline and Talk Back Units. Action Required Passengers must comply with "Fire Notices," refrain from carrying inflammable materials or smoking in coaches, and familiarize themselves with emergency exit locations and alarm buttons.

Stakeholder: Frontline Railway Staff (Loco Pilots, TTEs, Station Managers) Impact Staff are designated as first responders and are empowered through specialized training to manage the "Golden Hour" during emergencies. Action Required Staff must complete integrated training modules in firefighting and first aid, follow laid-down communication protocols, and participate in regular safety drives and mock drills.

Stakeholder: Railway Administration (Zones and Divisions) Impact Divisional authorities are responsible for maintaining a state of high readiness and ensuring the functionality of relief infrastructure and electrical systems. Action Required Authorities must conduct regular electrical audits, maintain the fleet of ARTs and ARMEs, and organize full-scale mock drills involving internal and external rescue agencies.
