The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has released information about an upcoming report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) titled "From Content to Commerce: Mapping India's Creator Economy." The report is set to be unveiled at WAVES 2025 in Mumbai on May 3, 2025. It projects that India's creator economy influences over $350 billion annually currently and forecasts this number to surpass $1 trillion by 2030.
India's digital space has a burgeoning creator population of approximately 2-2.5 million individuals who have more than 1,000 followers but are monetizing their content inefficiently, leaving significant potential untapped. Today, the direct revenue generated by creators is estimated at $2 billion annually, estimated to grow to $10-$12.5 billion by the end of this decade.
Creators influence over 30% of consumer decisions and direct roughly $350-$400 billion in spending today. This sector is expanding beyond targeting Gen Z audiences in major cities; it's becoming more inclusive, reaching varied age groups across different city tiers. Shortform video content remains dominant among creators' output with comedy, films, daily soaps, and fashion being the most consumable genres.
Brand strategies are evolving to suit the ecosystem better by emphasizing faster content production, increasing creative freedom for creators, diversifying consumer targeting, and conducting outcome-based testing. Revenue models have broadened beyond traditional methods to include consumer-funded avenues like virtual gifting, live commerce, and subscriptions with brands expected to increase their creator marketing investments 1.5 to 3 times.
Significantly, the BCG report underscores that India's expansion in digital media sectors, including AI, social media, AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics), and films, highlights India's growing footprint in the digital media sphere. For updates on this ongoing development, interested parties are advised to follow WAVES 2025's official channels on various platforms.
This information provides a snapshot of India's creator economy's rapid growth trajectory up till 2030 as indicated by BCG's upcoming report and its profound influence on consumer spendings and brand strategies.
