Shri Girish C. Hosur, Joint Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities
(DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, visited the Ali Yavar Jung
National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) [AYJNISHD(D)], Mumbai today.
Dr. Suman Kumar, Director, AYJNISHD(D), extended a warm welcome and felicitated Shri Girish C.
Hosur during his visit to the Institute. The Director introduced the Joint Secretary to the Heads of various
Departments, facilitating meaningful interactions and exchange of ideas. This was followed by a tree
plantation programme within the Institute premises.
Department Heads and faculty members briefed the Joint Secretary about their ongoing programmes,
services and future initiatives. Detailed discussions were held on the role of each department in
empowering persons with speech, language and hearing disabilities, as well as in extending services to the
community.
During the visit, Shri Hosur toured key departments, including the Cross Disability Early Identification
and Intervention Centre (CDEIC), Audiology Department, Speech and Language Pathology Department,
Information and Documentation Centre, Institute Library and Psychology Department, and reviewed their
activities and services. He also visited the new hostel building currently under construction.The Joint Secretary inaugurated the Tele-Rehabilitation and Voice Recording Room and reviewed the
facilities created to strengthen service delivery and outreach.
At the Cross Disability Early Identification and Intervention Centre (CDEIC), Dr. Suni Mathew explained
the wide range of therapies and services provided to children aged 0–6 years with various types of
disabilities. She highlighted the importance of early identification, intervention and holistic rehabilitation
in ensuring the best possible outcomes for children and their families.Shri Girish C. Hosur appreciated the dedicated efforts of AYJNISHD(D) in delivering comprehensive
clinical, academic and community-based services to persons with disabilities. He encouraged the Institute
to continue strengthening its outreach, research and capacity-building programmes, thereby contributing to
the vision of an inclusive society.
