Mumbai : 21 September 2026 Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has initiated a series of measures to strengthen and upgrade its road infrastructure in view of increasing traffic and to ensure safer and smoother movement of commuters and port-related traffic.

The road network within the Mumbai Port estate has largely been developed on reclaimed land and is currently handling traffic volumes significantly higher than its original design capacity. The commissioning of Atal Setu has further increased traffic movement through the Port road network. At present, the network handles approximately 9,200 commercial vehicles per day, in addition to passenger vehicles and heavy vehicles involved in port cargo movement.

To undertake long-term and technically sound improvements, MbPA has appointed IIT Bombay as the Design and Project Management Consultant (PMC) for systematic upgradation of its road network. The programme is being implemented in phases to bring the roads in line with modern engineering standards and present and projected traffic requirements.

Under Phase-I, tenders have been invited for improvement of approximately 2.6 km of road from Sewri Junction to Mahul. The work is expected to be awarded by November 1, 2026. Under Phase-II, the remaining major stretch from NTOB to Sewri is proposed to be upgraded, with the work expected to be awarded by February 1, 2027.

As an immediate measure to address traffic disruption caused by the closure at Kharoo Creek, MbPA has also entrusted IIT Bombay with the design and project management for construction of a steel bridge at Kharoo Creek. The work is being taken up on priority and is targeted for completion before the next monsoon.

The road improvement measures are aimed at addressing the combined impact of increasing city and port- related traffic, changing regional connectivity after the commissioning of Atal Setu and sustained movement of heavy commercial vehicles.

Through immediate traffic management measures and long-term infrastructure strengthening, MbPA is working towards improving road safety, riding quality and traffic movement while ensuring that the port road network keeps pace with Mumbai’s growing transportation and logistics requirements.
