Mumbai, 5 June 2026
Mumbai Port Authority organized a tree plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment
Day 2026 under the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, reaffirming its commitment to
environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The plantation programme, organized by the Civil Engineering Department of Mumbai Port
Authority, was conducted at two locations in Mumbai and resulted in the plantation of a total of
1,500 saplings and plants. This includes 500 trees were planted at Ram Mandir, Cotton Green
East, while 1,000 bamboo plants were planted along the footpaths at Sewri Gadi Adda, below
Atal Setu, Sewri East.
The plantation activity at Cotton Green was carried out in association with FICCI FLO, while the
Sewri plantation drive was organized in collaboration with the Director General of Shipping and
the Amazing Nautical Association.
The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative encourages citizens to plant a tree in honour of their
mothers, symbolizing gratitude towards both motherhood and nature. Beyond increasing green
cover, the initiative promotes environmental awareness and public participation in building a
sustainable future.Speaking on the occasion, Dr. P. N. Bahekar, Secretary, Mumbai Port Authority, said that planting
a tree in the name of one’s mother is both a tribute and a commitment to protect nature and
leave behind a healthier environment for future generations. He emphasised that development
and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand and that every tree planted contributes
towards cleaner air, greener public spaces and a more sustainable future.
The bamboo plantation at Sewri East is expected to enhance greenery along a key public
movement corridor near Atal Setu, while the Cotton Green plantation will strengthen green
cover in a port-linked urban area.
Mumbai Port Authority continues to undertake initiatives promoting sustainable port operations
and environmental stewardship, reflecting its commitment to responsible and inclusive
development.
