Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Mumbai Port Authority undertakes tree plantation drive under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative on World Environment Day प्रव तथ: 05 JUN 2026 5:45PM by PIB Mumbai Mumbai, 5 June 2026 Mumbai Port Authority organized a tree plantation drive on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026 under the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. The plantation programme, organized by the Civil Engineering Department of Mumbai Port Authority, was conducted at two locations in Mumbai and resulted in the plantation of a total of 1,500 saplings and plants. This includes 500 trees were planted at Ram Mandir, Cotton Green East, while 1,000 bamboo plants were planted along the footpaths at Sewri Gadi Adda, below Atal Setu, Sewri East. The plantation activity at Cotton Green was carried out in association with FICCI FLO, while the Sewri plantation drive was organized in collaboration with the Director General of Shipping and the Amazing Nautical Association. The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative encourages citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers, symbolizing gratitude towards both motherhood and nature. Beyond increasing green cover, the initiative promotes environmental awareness and public participation in building a sustainable future.Speaking on the occasion, Dr. P. N. Bahekar, Secretary, Mumbai Port Authority, said that planting a tree in the name of one’s mother is both a tribute and a commitment to protect nature and leave behind a healthier environment for future generations. He emphasised that development and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand and that every tree planted contributes towards cleaner air, greener public spaces and a more sustainable future. The bamboo plantation at Sewri East is expected to enhance greenery along a key public movement corridor near Atal Setu, while the Cotton Green plantation will strengthen green cover in a port-linked urban area.
