The National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC), functioning under the National Film
Development Corporation (NFDC) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting,
Government of India, welcomed more than 17,000 visitors in May 2026, marking one of the
highest monthly footfalls in the museum's history.
The achievement reflects the growing public interest in India's cinematic heritage and the
museum's continued efforts to engage audiences across age groups. Throughout the month,
families, students, cinema enthusiasts and tourists on Mumbai Darshan tours visited the
museum in large numbers. Visitors explored the museum's world-class galleries featuring rare
vintage film equipment, iconic memorabilia and interactive multimedia exhibits that showcase
the evolution of Indian cinema over more than a century. This also reflects that NMIC has
carved a significant place amongst places of tourist interest in Mumbai, which is India’s
entertainment capital.
The remarkable turnout has further strengthened NMIC's position as one of Mumbai's leading
cultural destinations. The milestone highlights the enduring appeal of Indian cinema and
underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating the nation's rich film heritage, stated
Shri Prakash Magdum, Managing Director, NFDC.
The core team of the Museum, under Shri D. Ramakrishnan, General Manager, NFDC, and Shri
Satyajit Mandle, Deputy General Manager and Museum Curator, NMIC, played a key role in this
success. The museum team conducted extensive outreach campaigns. Through active
coordination with educational institutions, organisations, tour operators and other stakeholders,
the museum significantly enhanced its visibility and encouraged group visits from across
Mumbai and beyond. As India's premier institution dedicated to cinematic heritage, NMIC remains the only museum
in the country that comprehensively presents the journey of Indian cinema from the silent era
to the present day, offering visitors a unique and immersive cultural experience.
