Need for establishment of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
at Silchar, Assam.-laid
SHRI PARIMAL SUKLABAIDYA (SILCHAR): I would like to know
from the Minister of Education about the proposal or representation
received by the Government for the establishment of an Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT) at Silchar, Assam, considering its role
as the educational hub of South Assam and neighbouring
North-Eastern States and provide details thereof along with the
present status of examination of the proposal. In this context, it is
to be mentioned that the Barak Valley and adjoining States
contribute a large number of JEE aspirants annually but due to lack
of an IIT-level institution, the students of Assam migrate to other
States for study. Hence, I request the Government to ensure
establishment of premier technical institutions in the North-Eastern
region, particularly in South Assam for balanced regional
distribution of such institutions.
