Need to ensure implementation of Safety norms to address and control accident caused deaths on National Highways across the country-Laid SHRI CHARANJIT SINGH CHANNI (JALANDHAR): I would like to draw the attention of the Government to the growing number of fatal accidents caused by unsafe road excavation works in cities such as Jalandhar, Delhi and other parts of the country. It has been observed that, in several instances, contractors undertake deep road digging without ensuring proper barricading, reflective signage, adequate lighting or deployment of safety personnel. Such negligence by executing agencies poses a grave threat to innocent commuters. Equally concerning is the unsatisfactory role of the local police in preventive enforcement. The police, being responsible for on-ground vigilance and public safety, must ensure that hazardous excavation sites are properly secured and monitored. Failure to conduct timely inspections and enforce compliance has contributed to avoidable tragedies. There is an urgent need for the concerned departments to mandate strict pre-approval checks before any road digging is undertaken and to enforce standard safety protocols without exception. Fixing accountability of contractors, supervising officials and local police authorities in a time-bound manner is essential. I urge the Government to implement uniform nationwide safety norms so that precious lives are not lost due to preventable administrative lapses.
