Executive Summary & Key Takeaways

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has issued a formal statement clarifying that India has made no concessions or commitments regarding the import of ethanol for fuel blending from the United States. The Ministry categorized recent media reports claiming that India intends to import large quantities of U.S. ethanol as "baseless and factually incorrect."

Key Policy Clarifications:

  • Domestic Sourcing Mandate: Under the current Ethanol Blended with Petrol Programme framework, all ethanol used for fuel blending is sourced entirely from domestic producers. There is currently no import of ethanol from the U.S. for this purpose.
  • Trade Discussions: No commitments or concessions relating to fuel ethanol imports were made during India-U.S. trade discussions. The Ministry stated that suggestions of a policy change to permit large-scale U.S. imports are misleading.
