Parliament Question: Academic Expansion of IITs

Shri Kesineni Sivanath: Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state: (a) the details of budget allocated for infrastructure and academic expansion of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), institute-wise; (b) the total number of posts created for new faculties in IITs, institute-wise; (c) the details of funds allocated and disbursed for construction and development of IIT Tirupati; (d) the proposed timeline for completion of IIT Tirupati campus and its present status; (e) whether the Government proposes to introduce any new specialized courses or academic programmes in the newly established IITs, particularly in IIT Tirupati; (f) if so, the details thereof; (g) whether any steps has been taken by the Government to ensure timely infrastructure development and faculty recruitment in IIT Tirupati and other new IITs; (h) if so, the details thereof; and (i) if not, the reasons thereof? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR) (a) to (i): Under Support to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Scheme, a total of Rs. 2,400 crore has been allocated for capital expenditure to all IITs for the Financial Year 2025-26. The various IITs increase their student strength, from time to time, in Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Ph.D, in various streams upon demand of students/industry and research and innovation prospects, by utilizing the grant-in-aid from the Government and their Internal Resource Generation (IRG). Further, in the Budget speech 2025-26, it has been announced to create additional infrastructure in the five IITs, which were started after 2014 to facilitate education for additional 6,500 students. Accordingly, Union Cabinet in its meeting held in May, 2025 has approved expansion of academic and infrastructure capacity including creation of Research Park of five new IITs which had been established in the State/UT of Andhra Pradesh (IIT Tirupati), Kerala (IIT Palakkad), Chhattisgarh (IIT Bhilai), Jammu & Kashmir (IIT Jammu) and Karnataka (IIT Dharwad) with a total outlay of Rs. 11,828.79 crore. The Cabinet has also approved creation of 130 faculty posts (at the level of Professor i.e. Level 14 & above) in these IITs. IITs offer cutting-edge educational programs and world-class infrastructure, fostering a culture of innovation and critical thinking. Globally recognized for producing alumni who lead in research, engineering, technology, management, and entrepreneurship, IITs have made a significant impact worldwide. The achievements of their graduates not only enhance the institutes' global reputation but also strengthen India’s position as a hub for innovation, technology, and leadership. IIT Tirupati was released Rs. 1091.75 Cr for construction of permanent campus under Phase-A. The permanent campus is now fully operational since October, 2023 and was dedicated to Nation by the Hon’ble Prime Minister in February, 2024. Further, Tirupati has also been sanctioned Rs. 2313.02 Cr for infrastructure development under Phase-B. IIT Tirupati offers B.Tech programs in 6 streams, 13 M.Tech programs, 3 M.Sc. programs, a Master’s in Public Policy program, and Ph.D. degrees in all 9 existing departments. The Institute currently has 137 full-time faculty members and 8 Adjunct faculty members. *****
