Central Grant to Universities
1. Shri Anil Yeshwant Desai:
Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government/UGC provides grants to some Universities of Eminence to
facilitate students for obtaining standard education;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with the annual grants being provided to JNU, AMU,
Jadhavpur & Kashmir Universities during the last five years and the current year;
(c) the details of boarding, lodging, tuition and other fees chargeable from the students on
monthly and yearly basis by these Universities; and
(d) the expectations of the society or Government from these students in return?
ANSWER

(a) and (b): Government/UGC provides additional grants to three Central Universities -
University of Delhi, University of Hyderabad and Banaras Hindu University under the , World
Class Institutions scheme, also known as Institution of Eminence (IoE). Jadavpur and Kashmir
University are state public university funded by respective State Government. However, UGC
provides grants under various schemes. The details of grants provided by the Government/UGC
during the last five years and current year is attached at Annexure-I.
(c): Central Universities are statutory autonomous organisations established under respective
Acts of Parliament and governed by provisions of Acts, Statutes, Ordinances, Regulations
made their under. Decisions regarding boarding, lodging, tuition and other fees chargeable
from the students are taken by the university with the approval of their Statutory Bodies.
(d): After completing the studies in the university students are expected to become a well-
rounded individual that possess 21st century skills in fields across the arts, humanities,
languages, sciences, social sciences, professional, technical, and vocational fields. As
beneficiaries of quality higher education, students are expected to use their learning and skills
to solve real-world problems, foster innovation, and support inclusive development.
