Parliament Question: Coach Composition in Asarva-Jaipur Superfast Express Train

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2804 TO BE ANSWERED ON 05.08.2026 COACH COMPOSITION IN ASARVA-JAIPUR SUPERFAST EXPRESS TRAIN †2804. SHRI RAJKUMAR ROAT: Will the Minister of RAILWAYS be pleased to state: (a) the details of the total number of general, sleeper, air-conditioned and other class of coaches currently operating in the Asarva-Jaipur Superfast Express; (b) the details of the number of passengers travelling in general and reserved classes along with the waiting list status in the said train during the last three years, year-wise; (c) whether due to a lower number of general class coaches, there is excessive overcrowding in the said train causing severe difficulties particularly to daily commuters, labourers and students of Rajasthan and Gujarat; (d) if so, the details of the complaints received and the action taken in this regard; (e) whether the Government is contemplating to attach two additional general class coaches to the said train or operating an additional train service in view of the increasing number of passengers; and (f) if so, the details and the estimated timeline fixed thereof? ANSWER MINISTER OF RAILWAYS, INFORMATION & BROADCASTING AND ELECTRONICS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SHRI ASHWINI VAISHNAW) (a) to (f) Presently, 17 pairs of trains (including 12981/82 Asarva- Khatipura Express) are catering to the needs of passengers of Jaipur Khatipura-Asarva sector. The occupancy of 12981/82 Asarva- Khatipura(Jaipur) Express during the financial Year 2023-24 to 2026-27(upto, June 26) was more than 100%, ranging between 103% to 111%. On Indian Railways, Waiting list position of the trains is monitored on regular basis and in order to cater to additional demand, Indian Railways operates Special train services and augments the load of trains to generate additional accommodation, subject to operational feasibility. Moreover, occupancy pattern of trains is not uniform throughout the year and it varies over lean and peak periods. During peak rush periods, the occupancy of the trains especially on popular Page 2 of 4routes remains full whereas during lean period and on less popular routes, there is sub optimal utilization. General Coaches: With a view to meet the demand of passengers travelling in unreserved coaches Indian Railways (IR) have significantly increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel. During the financial year 2024-25 alone, 1250 general coaches have been utilised in various long- distance trains to have at least 4 general class coaches. Similarly, during the year 2025-26 about 870 Coaches including 160 General Class coaches have been utilised for permanent augmentation. To cater to the travel demand of the low and middle income families, Indian Railways have taken up manufacturing of 17,000 non-AC coaches (general/sleeper) over the next 5 years. On IR, the percentage of non-AC coaches, is about 70% as indicated below: Table-1: Distribution of Coaches Non-AC coaches (general and ~62,000 ~70% sleeper) AC coaches ~27,000 ~30% Total coaches ~89,000 100% Table-2: Distribution of Seats Type of Seats Number of seats Percentage Non-AC Seats ~54 lakhs ~78% AC Seats ~15 lakhs ~22% Total Seats ~69 lakhs 100% Page 3 of 4Furthermore, introduction of train services on any route/section and augmentation of train services are an on-going processes, which depends on various factors including:  Capacity of that section  Availability of path  Availability of required rolling stock  Availability of matching infrastructure for rolling stock  Maintenance requirement of railway tracks and other assets  Occupancy and the traffic requirement of the section RailMadad is Indian Railway grievance redressal mechanism that provided passengers an integrated platform for grievances, assistance and inquiry. In RailMadad, passengers can seek redressal through multiple channels such as Helpline number-139, RailMadad Web, App and SMS.
