CONSTRUCTION OF NEW NATIONAL HIGHWAYS IN BIHAR
3780. SHRI SANJAY YADAV:
Will the Minister of ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS be pleased to state:
(a) whether as compared to rest of country, expansion of National Highways (NHs) in Bihar is
progressing at nearly half the pace and per one lakh population, the length of National Highways
in Bihar is only 4.54 kilometers, significantly lower than national average;
(b) reasons for growth of NHs in Bihar being only 36 percent during last five years;
(c) reasons for significantly lower length of NHs in Bihar compared to national average; and
(d) whether any special action plan and timeline has been fixed for Bihar for construction of
more than 6,300 kilometers of new NHs required to meet national average?

(a) to (c) As compared to about 10% growth of National Highway (NH) network during the
period 2020 to 2026 (from 1,32,995 km to 1,46,566 km), the length of NH network in the State
of Bihar has expanded by about 19%, from 5,387 km to about 6,400 km at present. The NH
density in the State of Bihar is about 67.97 km per thousand square km of geographical area,
which is significantly higher than the corresponding national average of 44.59 km per thousand
square km. The population density of the State is higher at 1106 persons per square km as
compared to national average of 382 persons per square km. This reflects in a lower NH density
per lakh population of about 6.17 km in Bihar compared to national average of about 12.13 km.
(d) Development and maintenance of National Highways (NHs) is a continuous process. Works
on NHs are accordingly taken up based on the traffic density, connectivity requirement,
condition of the road and synergy with PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP).
