DAMAGE TO FOODGRAINS IN FCI STOCK
1148: DR. VIKRAMJIT SINGH SAHNEY:
Will the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution be pleased to
state :
(a): whether Government has assessed damage to foodgrains in FCI stock, item-wise,
including monetary value during the last three years;
(b): the details offoodgrain damage due to insufficient FCI godowns;
(C): steps taken to prevent such damage in future;
(d): whether there is disproportionate grain loss in Punjab due to inadequate storage
infrastructure and delayed procurement operations; and
(e): wether Government proposes to strengthen cold chain and modern silos in Punjab to
reduce wastage?

(a): Yes. The government has assessed the damage to foodgrains in Food Corporation of
India (FCI) stock. The item-wise details, including the monetary value of the damaged
foodgrains over the last three years, are as under:

(b): No central pool foodgrains got damaged due to insufficient FCI godowns.
(c): Does not arise in view to (b) above.
(d) and (e): There is no such report of any disproportionate grain loss in Punjab due to
inadequate storage infrastructure. Further, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI)
under the component scheme-cold chain of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY)
supports setting up of cold chain infrastructure. The scheme is demand driven and proposals are
invited on Pan India basis (including Punjab) by floating Expression of Interest (EoI) from time
to time based on the availability of funds. As far as modern silos are concerned, a total 9.25
LMT capacity silos have been created in Punjab state.
