Parliament Question: Development of airports in the country and future plans

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. : 2575 TO BE ANSWERED ON THE 16th March 2026 DEVELOPMENT OF AIRPORTS IN THE COUNTRY AND FUTURE PLANS 2575. DR. SANDEEP KUMAR PATHAK Will the Minister of CIVIL AVIATION be pleased to state:- (a) the number of new airports constructed and existing airports expanded in the country during the last five years, the details thereof State-wise; (b) the number of airports currently under construction and their expected timeline for completion; (c) whether any long-term master plan has been prepared through the airports Authority of India and other agencies to make India a global aviation hub by 2047, if so, the details thereof; and (d) the budget allocated and spent so far for the above projects, the details thereof? ANSWER Minister of State in the Ministry of CIVIL AVIATION (Shri Murlidhar Mohol) (a) & (b): As per the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy, 2008, Government of India (GoI) has accorded 'In-Principle' approval for setting up of 24 Greenfield Airports across the country. Out of these, 13 Greenfield airports have been operationalised. Further, Upgradation/ Modernisation of airports is a continuous process. Since FY 2019-20, airport projects have been undertaken by Airports Authority of India (AAI) and airport operators/developers under Public Private Partnership (PPP) at several airports across the country including at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Guwahati, Ayodhya, Kushinagar, Itanagar, Dehradun, Agartala, Patna, Vijayawada, Deoghar, Amrtisar, Chennai, Tirupati, Mangalore, Kolkata, Port Blair, Surat, Tiruchirapally, Kolhapur, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Rajkot, Leh, Hubballi, Imphal, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Rajahmundry, Belagavi, Prayagraj, Tuticorin, Patna etc. The timeline for completion of the airport projects depend upon several factors such as land acquisition, financial closure, obtaining mandatory clearances including environmental clearances etc.(c): AAI has prepared Master Plans for AAI airports up to year 2047. (d): The responsibility for implementation of the airport projects including funding lies with the Project Proponent. AAI and other airport operators/developers have incurred Capital Expenditure of more than Rs. 96000 crore under six year National Infrastructure Pipeline during FY 2019-20 to FY 2024-25. Out of this, more than Rs. 28000 crore has been incurred by AAI and the remaining by airport operators/developers under PPP mode. ******
