DEVELOPMENT OF MICE FACILITY AT SCIENCE CITY, KOLKATA
4918. SHRI KARTICK CHANDRA PAUL:
Will the Minister of TOURISM be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government has approved the proposal to develop
Eastern India’s largest indoor MICE (Meetings, Incentives,
Conferences and Exhibitions) facility at Science City, Kolkata;
(b) the details of estimated project cost, funding pattern and
implementing agency for the proposed facility;
(c) the present status of planning, design finalisation, statutory
approvals and tendering;
(d) the timeline for commencement of construction, completion and
commissioning; and
(e) the details of projected capacity of the facility and its expected
impact on Kolkata’s MICE tourism, employment generation and
international conference footfall?
ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF TOURISM (SHRI GAJENDRA SINGH SHEKHAWAT)
(a) to (e): Development and promotion of tourist destinations and
products, including MICE tourism, is primarily undertaken by the
respective State Government/Union Territory (UT) Administration.
The Ministry of Tourism through its central sector schemes of ‘Swadesh
Darshan’, ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation
Drive (PRASHAD)’ and ‘Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism
Infrastructure Development’ extends financial assistance to the State
Governments/UT Administrations for tourism infrastructure development
in the country. The central financial assistance is being extended
according to guidelines and based on proposals / detailed project reports
received from the States and UT Governments. The list of Projectssanctioned for development of Convention centres and associated
infrastructure, is given at Annexure-I.
There is no proposal at present to develop Eastern India’s largest
indoor MICE facility at Science City, Kolkata. However, details of other
projects sanctioned in West Bengal is given at Annexure-II.
