On December 11, 2025, Shri Durai Vaiko submitted Unstarred Question No. 1917 to the Lok Sabha, directed to the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, regarding the development of a Northern Ring Road for Tiruchirappalli. The question inquired about:
1. Any proposal received for the development of a Northern Ring Road for Tiruchirappalli.
2. Whether the ring road is planned to connect highways leading to Karur (NH 81), Namakkal (via Musiri route), Thuraiyur (SH 62), Chennai (NH 38), Ariyalur (NH 136), and Thanjavur (NH 83).
3. Any feasibility study, Detailed Project Report (DPR), or land assessment undertaken.
4. The present status of these studies.
5. Prioritization and sanctioning of the project under Bharatmala or other national highway development programs.
In response, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari, stated that the government is continuously receiving/undertaking/preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and proposals for widening/development of National Highways nationwide. Project implementation and investment decisions are based on DPR outcomes, connectivity requirements, traffic density, and synergy with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The DPR for the southern part of the Tiruchirappalli Ring Road has been awarded. As of the response date, there is no proposal to take up the northern part of the Ring Road to Tiruchirappalli.

(a) whether the Government has received any proposal for the
development of a Northern Ring Road for Tiruchirappalli to enhance
regional connectivity and decongest urban traffic, if so, the details
thereof;
(b) whether the proposed alignment of the Northern Ring Road is
planned to strategically connect major highways leading to Karur (NH
81), Namakkal (via Musiri route), Thuraiyur (SH 62), Chennai (NH 38),
Ariyalur (NH 136) and Thanjavur (NH 83), if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether any feasibility study, detailed project report (DPR) or
land assessment has been undertaken in this regard;
(d) if so, the present status of such studies; and
(e) whether the Government would consider prioritising and
sanctioning this project under the Bharatmala or other national
highway development programmes given its potential to improve
freight mobility and support the overall economic growth of central

(a) to (e) Government keeps on receiving/ undertaking/ preparing
Detailed Project Report (DPR)/proposal for widening/development of
National Highway in the country. Decision for project implementation
and investment is taken based on the outcome of DPR, requirement of
connectivity, traffic density and synergy with PM Gati Shakti National
Master Plan. As regard Ring Road of Tiruchirappali, the DPR for
southern part is awarded. At present, there is no proposal to take up
northern part of Ring Road to Tiruchirappalli.
