Parliament Question: Establishing Special Economic Zones

SHRI RAMASAHAYAM RAGHURAM REDDY: Will the Minister of COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (वाणिज्य एवं उद्योग मंत्री) be pleased to state: (a) the steps taken by the Government to establish a special economic zones for pharmaceutical industries; (b) the details regarding such establishments in the State of Telangana; and (c) the details on expansion of such zones for the pharmaceutical industry in the next five years? ANSWER वाणिज्य एवं उद्योग मंत्रालय में राज्यमंत्री (श्री णिणिन प्रसाद) THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (SHRI JITIN PRASADA) (a) to (c) Special Economic Zones (SEZs) set up under the SEZ Act, 2005 and SEZ Rules, 2006 are primarily private investment driven initiatives which may be established either jointly or severally by the Central Government, State Governments or any person. The Board of Approval constituted under the SEZ Act, 2005 considers proposals to set up SEZs, including for pharmaceutical industries, which have been duly recommended by the respective State Governments. At present, there are fifteen (15) SEZs notified in the country for pharmaceutical sector, including two (2) such SEZs in the State of Telangana. The details of notified and operational SEZs in Telangana for pharmaceutical industries are at Annexure. There are 56 pharmaceutical units in these 15 SEZs.
