Establishment of Higher Education Institutions in Bihar
2674. Dr. Mohammad Jawed:
Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:
(a) the details of the number of higher education institutions established in the State of Bihar during
the last ten years;
(b) the details of such institutions, including universities, colleges and other higher education
institutions established during the said period, year-wise and district-wise;
(c) the criteria and policy framework followed by the Government for the establishment of higher
education institutions in different districts of the said State;
(d) the steps taken by the Government to ensure equitable regional distribution of higher education
institutions across various districts of Bihar; and
(e) whether the Government proposes to establish new higher education institutions in underserved
districts of Bihar and if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (e): Prior to the year 2014, Bihar had a total of 03 Centrally Funded Institutions with 1- IIT (IIT
Patna), 1- NIT (NIT Patna) and 1- Central University (Central University of South Bihar, Gaya).
After 2014, three new Centrally Funded Institutions have been established in Bihar viz. IIM Bodh
Gaya, Mahatma Gandhi Central University Motihari, IIIT (PPP) Bhagalpur established in the year
2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively. At present 06 Central Funded Institutions are functioning in the
Bihar State. The Central Higher Education Institutions/Universities are envisaged as pace setting
institutions to provide academic leadership to other institutions in the region.
Setting up of higher education institutions is an ongoing process. Depending on the need, educational
institutions are opened from time to time. Education being subject matter of concurrent list, it is joint
responsibility of Central as well as State Government to take action for implementation of NEP 2020.
The Government is committed to provide quality education to all. The details of data related to higher
