Parliament Question: Establishment of Medical College at Port

SHRI JAGANNATH SARKAR: Will the Minister of PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS be pleased to state: प(cid:419)न, पोत प(cid:464)रवहन और जलमाग (cid:91) म(cid:287)ं ी (a) whether there was any proposal to establish a Medical College along with the upgradation of the Centenary Hospital at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port into a super- speciality hospital; (b) if so, the details of the proposal, including capacity, investment and timeline and whether the same has been dropped or kept in abeyance; (c) whether the recently awarded PPP project for development of the hospital to a 450- bedded facility includes any provision for a teaching institution or medical college; and (d) if so, the reasons for not including or proceeding with the Medical College component despite expansion of hospital infrastructure? ANSWER MINISTER OF PORTS, SHIPPING AND WATERWAYS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL) (a) & (b) Yes. A proposal was envisaged to establish a Medical College along with the upgradation of the Centenary Hospital at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) into a Super Speciality Hospital. The salient features of the proposal were as under: Sl. Particulars Details No. (i) Proposed capacity of the 100 seats Medical College (ii) Investment for the Not specified in the Tender and was left to be proposed Medical determined by the selected Concessionaire. College(iii) Timeline for the No timeline was specified, as the development of the proposed Medical Medical College was an optional component under the College tender. However, following a review of the project structure during the tendering process, the proposal for establishment of a Medical College was not taken forward by SMPA. (c) & (d) The project aims to provide better and improved treatment facilities for the SMPA employees, pensioners and other beneficiaries through development of a Super Speciality Hospital and accordingly, the Medical College component was excluded from the project as potential bidders were not interested in the combined project. *****
