Expenditure on education
2136 Shri Prakash Chik Baraik:
Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state:
(a) the targeted expenditure as the percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) under the New
Education Policy;
(b) the expenditure on education as percentage of GDP as of 1st January, 2026; and
(c) Union Government's share in the total expenditure on education?
ANSWER

(a) to (c): Education being in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, increasing expenditure in
education is the responsibility of the Central and States Governments. As per National
Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the targeted expenditure on education (Central and States/UTs)
as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is 6%.
As per latest report on “Analysis of Budgeted Expenditure on Education, 2022-23”,
public expenditure on education (Central and States/UTs) as a percentage of Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) is 4.06%.
