FUNCTIONING OF NATIONAL AND STATE WOMEN’S COMMISSIONS
2227. MS. SWATI MALIWAL:
Will the Minister of WOMEN AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:
(a) details of vacancies in the posts of Chairpersons and Members of National Commission
for Women and State Women’s Commissions, along with year since the vacancy exists;
(b) details of the sanctioned strength, posts filled and vacancies, category-wise and position-
wise, Commission-wise, including National Commission for Women (NCW);
(c) number of cases received, disposed of, resolved and pending with NCW and State
Women’s Commissions, year-wise and Commission-wise, including number of (suo-
motu) cases taken up; and
(d) whether Government has assessed the impact of vacancies, if any, on disposal of cases
and overall functioning of these Commissions and steps taken to ensure that vacancies are
filled in a time-bound manner?
ANSWER
MINISTER OF WOMEN AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT

(a) The National Commission for Women consists of one Chairperson and five Members. The
post of Chairperson is filled. Two posts out of the five posts of Members are vacant since the
year 2022 while two posts have fallen vacant recently in 2026. The filling of the posts is
continuous process.
State Commissions for Women are statutory bodies established by individual State
Governments through their respective State legislations. They function under the administrative
jurisdiction of the State Government concerned.
(b) Details of the sanctioned strength, posts filled and vacancies, category-wise and position-
wise in NCW are at Annexure.
(c) The year-wise data of complaints related to deprivation of women’s rights/crimes against
women registered with the National Commission for Women including Suo-Motu cases taken

(d) National Commission for Women has engaged staff on contractual basis to meet its
