Functioning of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language
501. Shri Mohammed Nadimul Haque:
Will the Minister of EDUCATION be pleased to state:
a) whether proposals submitted by National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language
(NCPUL) since 2022 for the World Urdu Conference, research grants, seminars,
publications or training centres have been acted upon;
b) if not, the reasons therefor;
c) the details of academic schemes, grant-in-aid programmes and Urdu-related events
approved, deferred or declined in the last five years and steps taken to enable the
Council to carry out its statutory and promotional functions; and
d) whether the Vice-Chairperson and Principal Publication Officer posts are vacant and
the reasons therefor?

(DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR)
(a) to (c): The National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) has been set up
by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education as a registered Society under
the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Council works for promotion, development and
propagation of Urdu language. In furtherance of its mandate, NCPUL implements several
schemes, offers certificate courses, academic projects etc. Academic and grant-in-aid
schemes, as well as Urdu-related programmes undertaken by NCPUL are attached at
Annexure-I. Further, Urdu-related public events are being organized regularly. World Urdu
Conference on “Viksit Bharat ka Vision, Urdu Zaban ka Mission” was organised from 21st to
23rd February, 2025 at India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi.
(d): The Executive Board of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language
(NCPUL) has been duly constituted. The details are also available on the official NCPUL
website: urducouncil.nic.in.

B. Grant-in-aid schemes of NCPUL includes support to select activities for promotion of
Urdu, bulk purchase of books, publication of manuscripts, Urdu press promotion etc.
C. Urdu-related programmes undertaken by NCPUL during last five years include book
promotion, academic projects / collaboration, international / national conference /
webinars / seminars / workshop / mushairas / cultural events, short term course on
capacity building of Urdu working journalist, vocational course (Paper Machie),
distance education (Urdu).
