(a) the total number of Geographical Indication (GI) tags granted to products
originating from Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, district and year-wise;
(b) whether the Government has assessed the annual economic value generated
by these GI-tagged products for local artisans and farmers including Himachal
Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, if so, the details thereof;
(c) the instances of GI infringement reported from Uttar Pradesh and Himachal
Pradesh during the last five years, including counterfeit Banarasi Sarees,
Lucknow Chikan Embroidery, Kalanamak Rice, spurious Kullu Shawls, Kangra
tea, Chamba rumal and Himachali kala zeera and other GI products sold online
and in neighbouring States;
(d) the quantum of penalties imposed and counterfeit goods seized under the
Geographical Indications Act, 1999 including Himachal Pradesh and Uttar
Pradesh; and
(e) the concrete steps taken or proposed to establish dedicated GI enforcement
cells in Uttar Pradesh, mandate e-commerce platforms to verify GI authenticity
and launch a State-specific awareness campaign to protect Himachal Pradesh
and Uttar Pradesh’s invaluable cultural heritage from duplication and
adulteration?

(a): Total number of Geographical Indication (GI) tags granted to products
originating from Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh is 81 and 11 respectively.
District and year- wise details of Geographical Indication (GI) tags granted to
products originating from Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh are attached as
Annexure – A and Annexure – B respectively.(b): GI protection granted under the Geographical Indications of Goods
(Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 allows registered proprietors and
authorised users to get benefit from the goodwill associated with these
products. Such protection aids in strengthening brand equity, premium pricing,
improving income generation and contributing to the broader economic value
for artisans, craftsmen and farmers involved, thereby enhancing overall income
generation for artisans, craftsmen and farmers. However, no such specific
assessment of economic value for GI Products from Uttar Pradesh and
Himachal Pradesh has been done.
(c) to (e): Geographical Indications Registry under DPIIT grants GI rights to registered
proprietors and authorised users, enabling them to safeguard and commercially
benefit from the distinct identity and reputation of GI products. Any infringement
is required to be pursued by the concerned GI proprietors or authorised users
under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act,
1999 with respective judicial or police authorities, who impose appropriate
penalties as per the provisions of the act and relevant guidelines.
Further, awareness and promotional activities are undertaken to support the
protection and recognition of GI products. The Uttar Pradesh Government has
organised several exhibitions, including a GI exhibition in Varanasi in 2021 and
GI showcases in all editions of the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show. In
Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology &
Environment (HIMCOSTE) regularly conducts programmes to raise awareness
about the State’s GI products.
