INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SPORTS IN BELAGAVI
157 SHRI IRANNA KADADI:
Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state:
(a) the status of upgrading or establishing a 'Sports Authority of India' (SAI) Regional Centre or Training
Centre in Belagavi;
(b) the details of central assistance provided for the development of 'Rani Channamma University' sports
infrastructure;
(c) the number of 'Fit India' certified schools in Belagavi district;
(d) the details of support being provided for promotion of traditional sports (e.g., Kushti) in Belagavi under
central schemes; and
(e) the status of 'Youth Hostel' in Belagavi and the plan for its upgradation?
ANSWER

(DR. MANSUKH MANDAVIYA)
(a) ‘Sports’ being a State Subject, the responsibility of promotion of sports rests primarily with the respective
State/UT Governments. The Central Government supplements efforts of the State/UT Governments. No such
proposal is under consideration for upgrading or establishing a 'Sports Authority of India' (SAI)
Regional Centre or Training Centre in Belagavi.
(b) No such proposal has been received in the Ministry.
(c) Total number of Registered Schools under “Fit India” from Belagavi is 218.
(d) In the State of Karnataka, traditional Indian Sports like Wrestling (Kusti) and Kabaddi are being
supported at STC Dharwad. Further, the Khelo India Scheme includes a component titled “Promotion of
Rural/Indigenous & Tribal Games” under the vertical “Promotion of Inclusiveness through Sport” to revive

(e) Youth Hostel at Sogal, located in Belagavi District, Karnataka, is functional and currently being utilised
for hostelling purposes. No proposal for its upgradation/renovation is presently under consideration.
