Executive Summary & Key Takeaways

Executive Summary: This document presents the Ministry of Power's response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 800 regarding installed power disparities. It provides details on India's installed generation capacity as of June 30, 2025, the power supply position from FY 2019-20 to FY 2025-26 (up to June 2025), and the status of national transmission infrastructure. The response also addresses measures to strengthen transmission networks in deficit-prone states. Key Points / Main Content: Installed Capacity and Generation: • As of June 30, 2025, India's installed generation capacity is 484.81 GW. • Development of generation capacity depends on fuel availability, logistics, resource potential, demand growth, and infrastructure readiness. • Annexure I provides state/UT and source-wise installed capacity details as of June 30, 2025. Power Supply Position: • Annexure II details the state/UT and region-wise power supply position in terms of energy from FY 2019-20 to FY 2025-26 (up to June 2025), including Gujarat. Transmission Infrastructure: • India's national transmission infrastructure is adequately developed for reliable power flow across regions. • A robust National Grid facilitates power transfer from surplus to deficit regions, mitigating regional disparities. • Imbalances in power supply and demand are effectively managed without significant transmission bottlenecks. • Inter-regional transmission capacity increased from 75,050 MW during 2016-17 to 120,340 MW as of June 2025. • Capacity is planned to increase to 143,000 MW by 2027 and 168,000 MW by 2032. Impact Analysis: State Utilities/Electricity Departments: Impact: Affected by the details of power supply positions and must align with the national grid. Action Required: Continue furnishing accurate power supply data to enable effective national power management. Power Surplus Regions: Impact: Responsible for transferring power to deficit regions. Action Required: Maintain capacity to support power transfer and coordinate with the National Grid. Power Deficit Regions: Impact: Benefit from the mitigation of regional disparities through power transfer. Action Required: Improve internal transmission networks to effectively receive and distribute transferred power. Ministry of Power: Impact: Oversees and regulates the power sector, addressing regional disparities and strengthening transmission networks. Action Required: Continue expanding national grid capacity and monitor power supply positions.

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF POWER LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.800 ANSWERED ON 24.07.2025 INSTALLED POWER DISPARITIES 800. DR. SHASHI THAROOR: Will the Minister of POWER be pleased to state: (a) whether regional disparities regarding installed power capacity persist in some States in the country even though as of early 2025, India’s installed power capacity stands at four lakh sixty-two thousand sixty-five megawatt and if so, the details thereof; (b) the details of the current power deficit percentages, especially compared to regions like the State of Gujarat which have met their energy demands consistently since 2019-20, State-wise; (c) the analysis regarding the manner in which these regional disparities impact the overall surplus and the effectiveness of the current transmission infrastructure; and (d) whether any specific short-term and long-term remedial measures are planned to strengthen transmission networks in deficit-prone States and if so, the details thereof A N S W E R THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF POWER (SHRI SHRIPAD NAIK) (a) : The Installed generation capacity of the country as on 30.06.2025 is 484.81 GW. The development of generation capacity is guided by a range of factors, including the availability of fuel sources, logistics, resource potential, demand growth and the readiness of associated infrastructure. The details of States/UTs and source-wise installed capacity are given at Annexure-I. (b) : States/UTs/Regions-wise details of Power Supply Position in terms of Energy for the period from FY 2019-20 to FY 2024-25 and current FY 2025-26 (upto June, 2025), including Gujarat are given at Annexure-II. (c) & (d): India’s national transmission infrastructure is adequately developed to ensure reliable power flow across regions. A robust National Grid has been established to facilitate the transfer of power from power surplus regions to power deficit regions thereby mitigating the impact of regional disparities on overall power availability. As a result, imbalances in power supply and demand due to locational constraints are effectively managed without significant transmission bottlenecks. The capacity of National Grid is being expanded on a continuous basis commensurate with the growth in electricity generation and electricity demand. The inter-regional transmission capacity has been increased from 75,050 MW during 2016-17 to 1,20,340 MW as on June 2025 which is planned to increase to 1,43,000 MW by the year 2027 and further to 1,68,000 MW by the year 2032. *******ANNEXURE-I ANNEXURE REFERRED IN REPLY TO PART (a) OF UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 800 ANSWERED IN THE LOK SABHA ON 24.07.2025 ************* State/ UT-wise and source-wise details of Installed Capacity as on 30.06.2025 (in MW) Sl.
