ITI INFRASTRUCTURE IN KARNATAKA
2430: SHRI P C MOHAN:
Will the Minister of SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP be pleased to
state:
(a) the number of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) established and existing ITIs upgraded in
Karnataka since 2014, including the 15 ITIs upgraded under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
scheme and 22 ITIs upgraded under the UDYOGA Programme;
(b) the status of Tata Technologies partnership with the State Government of Karnataka to
modernise 150 Government ITIs across the State, and the funds utilised/invested so far;
(c) the number of National Skill Training Institutes and other Central Field Institutes operating
in Bengaluru under the Regional Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship,
Karnataka; and
(d) the curriculum reforms and future-ready trades, including Computer Numerical Control
(CNC), Electric Vehicle (EV) and green energy technician courses, introduced in Karnataka's ITIs
to align with emerging industry requirements?
ANSWER

(a) The Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development
& Entrepreneurship (MSDE) runs the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS), implemented mainly
through the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). The ITIs are under the administrative and financial
control of the respective State Governments. However, DGT has supported the upgradation of
ITIs as per the needs highlighted by State/UT Governments including the State of Karnataka
through various schemes, such as the Upgradation of Existing Government ITIs into Model ITIs,
Upgradation of 1396 Government ITIs through Public Private Partnership (PPP) and the Skill
Strengthening for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE) Scheme.
As per the information received from the State of Government of Karnataka, the total number of
new ITIs established since 2014 is 141 out of which 112 are Government ITIs and 29 Private ITIs.
Details of ITIs upgraded in the State of Karnataka under various Centrally Sponsored Schemes
are given at Annexure-I.
(b) Under the UDYOGA Project of the Government of Karnataka, a Memorandum of
Agreement (MoA) was signed between the Government of Karnataka and Tata Technologies
Ltd. and 150 Government ITIs were upgraded in coordination with TATA Technologies Ltd.
The total project cost is Rs 4,636.50 crore, with 88% of the cost contributed by Tata Technologies
Ltd. and the remaining 12% by the Government of Karnataka. In addition, Rs. 220 crore hasbeen allocated by the Government of Karnataka for the creation of civil infrastructure, including
workshops and technology laboratories.
(c) As on date, two (02) Central Field Institutes (CFIs) are operational in Bengaluru, namely,
(i) National Skill Training Institute, Bengaluru; and (ii) National Skill Training Institute (Women),
Bengaluru.
(d) DGT has developed 170 NSQF-compliant courses, including 32 New Age/ Future Skills
courses, under CTS for addressing the need of the future ready job-roles in areas of Artificial
Intelligence (AI), Mechatronics, Computer Numerical Control (CNC), Electric vehicle (EV),
Green Energy and other emerging technologies across the country. These courses are delivered
through a nationwide network of ITIs and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) with durations
of six months, one year, and two years. The list of these new-age courses is at Annexure-II.
To meet the demand of modern economy and latest technology in the industrial sector, new
courses are continuously developed and existing courses are also upgraded in consultation with
Industries, academia and State/ UT. The courses are upgraded by incorporating the new
technology, latest tools, equipment and machineries in the curricula in view of requirements of
emerging technology.
In addition to the above, the Government of Karnataka has also introduced 23 Short terms
courses under the UDYOGA project in co-ordination with Tata Technology Ltd. The list of these
courses is at Annexure-III.Annexure-I
