GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF SCHOOL EDUCATION AND LITERACY RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2911 ANSWERED ON 18.03.2026 Kendriya Vidyalayas in underserved districts of Maharashtra 2911 Shri Sanjay Raut: Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state: (a) whether Government is aware that despite strong demand in rural, tribal and backward districts of Maharashtra such as Gadchiroli and Nandurbar, no new Kendriya Vidyalayas have been sanctioned due to non-receipt of so-called “feasible proposals” and the reasons for such inaction; (b) the status of the existing Kendriya Vidyalayas in Maharashtra, including enrolment capacity, infrastructure gaps, teacher vacancies and unmet demand for affordable CBSE education, district-wise; and (c) the concrete steps being taken to remove land and funding barriers, ensure State-Centre coordination and expand Kendriya Vidyalayas in aspirational and neglected regions of Maharashtra? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (SHRI JAYANT CHAUDHARY) (a) to (c) Opening of new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) is a continuous process. KVs are opened primarily to cater to the educational needs of the wards of transferable Central Government Employees including Defence & Para-Military personnel, Central Autonomous Bodies, Central Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and Central Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) by providing a common programme of education throughout the country. Proposals for opening of new KVs may be sponsored by Ministries or Departments of the Government of India/State Governments/ Union Territories Administrations, with commitment to provide requisite extent of land, free of cost and suitable rent-free temporary accommodation for setting up a new KV, as per Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) norms. KVs are not opened on the criteria of State/ UT / Parliamentary Constituency / District/Rural/ Tribal/ Backward/ Aspirational region.The Government of India has recently sanctioned 85 new KVs in December, 2024 across the country, including 03 KV in the State of Maharashtra, namely (i) KV NDRF Campus, Sudumbare, Pune (ii) KV Nachane (District Ratnagiri) and (iii) KV Akola (District Akola). Further, as per information received from KVS, no feasible proposal for opening of new KVs in Gadchiroli and Nandurbar Districts of Maharashtra have been received from the State Government/District Administration. Efforts are made by the Ministry of Education and KVS to resolve issues related to land availability through continuous consultation with the State Government and the concerned District Administration. At present, 60 KVs are functional in the State of Maharashtra. These KVs are catering to the demand for affordable and quality CBSE education in the State. Further, infrastructure development in KVs is a continuous process undertaken as per requirement and availability of resources. As per information received from KVS, at present, no significant infrastructure gaps have been reported in the KVs functioning in the State of Maharashtra. Vacancies keep on arising due to opening of new KVs, retirement, resignation, promotion of employees, transfer, employees going on lien to another department and up-gradation of schools. Filling up of vacancies is a continuous process and efforts are made to fill up the vacancies as per the provisions of the relevant recruitment rules of KVS. Teachers are also engaged on contractual basis for temporary duration by KVS to ensure that the teaching-learning process is not hampered.
