Parliament Question: LNG Terminal at Ennore Port and PNG Supply in Chennai

LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION No. 2061 TO BE ANSWERED ON 30th July, 2026 LNG TERMINAL AT ENNORE PORT AND PNG SUPPLY IN CHENNAI 2061. SHRI T R BAALU: पेट(cid:332)ोिलयम और (cid:366)ाकृ ितक गैस मं(cid:361)ी Will the Minister of PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS be pleased to state: (a) whether the LNG import terminal at Ennore Port is operating to its full capacity, if so, the details thereof; (b) whether Indian Oil Corporation is planning to double the capacity of the LNG import terminal at Ennore Port, if so, the details thereof; (c) the timeline by which the additional capacity is likely to become operational; and (d) the action plan for supplying piped gas to households in Chennai and its suburbs? ANSWER पेट(cid:332)ोिलयम और (cid:366)ाकृ ितक गैस मं(cid:361)ालय म(cid:336) रा(cid:475) मं(cid:361)ी ((cid:373)ी सुरेश गोपी) MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS (SHRI SURESH GOPI) (a) to (c) Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is operating a 5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) LNG import terminal at Ennore, Tamil Nadu. IOCL has informed that the Ennore Terminal's capacity utilization has shown a consistent upward trend over the years, rising from 14.3% in 2020-21 to 25.18% in 2025-26. The terminal is currently handling 1.26 Million Metric Tons (MMT) against its installed capacity of 5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA). IOCL has further informed that the expansion of the Ennore LNG Terminal will be contingent upon terminal capacity utilization and techno commercial-feasibility. (d) Providing Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections is part of the development of City Gas Distribution (CGD) Network, which inter alia include creation of pipeline infrastructure and other facilities for the supply of PNG to domestic, commercial and industrial units and is being carried out by the entities authorized by Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). Chennai is part of Chennai & Tiruvallur Districts Geographical Area (GA) authorised to Torrent Gas Limited for the development CGD network. CGD infrastructure roll out is undertaken by the authorised entities in accordance with the authorisation granted by PNGRB and approved project plan. As on 31.05.2026, the authorised entity has provided 5,253 PNG domestic connections in the GA. *****
