Parliament Question: Loss of Jobs in IT Sector

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1759 TO BE ANSWERED ON: 29.07.2026 LOSS OF JOBS IN IT SECTOR 1759. ADV DEAN KURIAKOSE: Will the Minister of ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY be pleased to state: (a) the total number of Jobs lost in the Information Technology (IT) sector during the last two years in the country; (b) whether the Government has undertaken any study to analyse the number of jobs to be created due to adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the number of jobs that are likely to be lost due to adoption of AI especially in the IT and ITES sector and if so, the details thereof; (c) whether the Government has any plans to provide help to employees who have lost their jobs due to structural changes in the Global Technology Ecosystem; and (d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE FOR ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (SHRI JITIN PRASADA) (a) and (b): As per National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), adjustments and corrections in the technology industry are a factor of business demand cycles in the industry. The Indian IT industry continues to be a net hirer, estimated to employ about 60 lakhs persons in FY 2025-26, an addition of 1.35 lakh professionals in FY 2025-26. As per NITI Aayog report “Roadmap for Job Creation in the AI Economy”, AI will transform roles across the IT sector. Routine roles such as junior Quality Assurance engineers and Level-1 customer support agents face reduction risk, however, new roles are emerging in categories such as enterprise AI roles, frontier technology roles, and AI governance roles. (c) and (d): The Government has launched initiatives like FutureSkills PRIME, which focuses on training youth in emerging technologies. These include AI, Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, cyber security, etc., providing cutting-edge digital training for employment opportunities. Under the programme so far over 34 lakh candidates have signed up on the FutureSkills PRIME portal. Of these, over 23 lakh candidates enrolled/trained in various courses, out of which over 13 lakh candidates have completed their courses. Further, National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous organization of the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) provides various long term/ short term skilling courses in IT/ITeS and other emerging domains through a wide network of 56 NIELIT Centres and 9000+ Partner Institutes. NIELIT has also launched NIELIT Digital University (NDU) Platform to deliver online and blended skill- based courses in emerging technology areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and otherfrontier domains. So far 2.75 lakh+ candidates have registered under the NIELIT Digital University Platform. . *******
