(a) whether the Geological Survey of India has conducted mineral exploration in
Tirunelveli district and if so, the details thereof along with the findings including the
funds sanctioned or released and the physical progress achieved during each of the
last three years and if not, the reasons therefor; and
(b) the details of the steps proposed to be taken by the Union Government in this
regard for Tirunelveli district and the time-frame fixed therefor?
ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR COAL AND MINES
(SHRI SATISH CHANDRA DUBEY)
(a) and (b): The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has not conducted mineral
exploration in Tirunelveli district during the last three years.
GSI had carried out mineral exploration programmes for various commodities
such as Mica, Graphite, Limestone, etc. in Tirunelveli district till field season 2005-
2006. These exploration projects did not yield significant outcome for any mineral
commodity and hence, mineral exploration was not taken up further in this district by
GSI.
