NAAC accreditation of colleges in West Bengal
2904 Shri Samik Bhattacharya:
Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state:
(a) number of institutions in West Bengal which were previously accredited by the National
Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) but whose accreditation has expired and
which are presently not accredited;
(b) names of such institutions along with the year of last accreditation, grade obtained and
the year in which their accreditation lapsed;
(c) whether these institutions have applied for re-accreditation and the present status of
such applications;
(d) whether UGC or NAAC has issued any advisory to institutions whose accreditation has
lapsed; and
(e) whether any financial grants, autonomy status or academic privileges are linked to valid
NAAC accreditation and the impact on such colleges in West Bengal?
ANSWER

(a) to (d): The accreditation of 3 Universities and 100 colleges in West Bengal, which were
previously accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has
expired. Further, these institutions have not applied for re-accreditation. Details of such
institutions along with the year of last accreditation, grade obtained and the year in which
their accreditation lapsed is available at

(e): As per University Grants Commission (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon
Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges)
Regulations, 2023, conferment or extension of autonomous status to colleges is linked to
valid NAAC accreditation.
Further, the UGC provides grants only to those universities and colleges which are
recognized under Section 12B of the UGC Act, 1956. NAAC accreditation is mandatory for
Higher Education Institutions to become eligible for recognition under Section 12B of the
UGC Act, 1956.
