ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS
(SHRI NITIN JAIRAM GADKARI)
(a) to (c) Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I was approved by the Government in
2017, envisaging development of 34,800 km of National Highways at anestimated outlay of Rs. 5,35,000 crore, with the objective of improving
connectivity to key economic centres and reducing logistics costs through
development of economic corridors, feeder routes, inter-corridors, and coastal
roads.
Under the programme, projects covering 26,425 km have been awarded, out of
which 22,223 km have been constructed as of February 2026. Details of
projects sanctioned, awarded, and completed under various programmes in the
State of Tamil Nadu during the last five years by National Highways Authority
of India (NHAI) are annexed.
(d) Road safety provisions are an integral part of the project scope and are
incorporated as per relevant Indian Road Congress (IRC) codes at the time of
estimate sanction. Accordingly, measures such as High Mast Lights, retro-
reflective signs, thermoplastic road markings, road studs, solar blinkers,
rumble strips, crash barriers, signboards, and hazard markers have been
provided at 44 locations on the Thiruppuvanam–Ramanathapuram section,
along with geometrical improvements at four locations on the Karaikudi–
Ramanathapuram section.
