National Teachers’ Awards
2115 # Shri Neeraj Dangi:
Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state:
(a) the aims and objectives of conferring the National Teachers’ Award on teachers;
(b) the criteria adopted for the selection of teachers for the National Teachers’ Awards conferred
on 5th September each year;
(c) the number of teachers honoured with the National Teachers’ Award in the current year and
the funds allocated and utilized for this purpose during each of the last three years and the current
year;
(d) whether Government has any proposal to grant out-of-turn promotion to award-winning
teachers, if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the facilities or incentives that are being provided to the award-winning teachers?

(a) & (b): The National Teachers’ Awards, organized under the aegis of the Department of School
Education on 5th September (Teachers Day) every year, aim to recognise and honour teachers
who, through their commitment and excellence, have improved the quality of education and
enriched the lives of their students. The selection is carried out through a transparent, merit-
based process based on objective criteria such as innovation in pedagogy, improvement in
learning outcomes, use of technology in teaching, promotion of inclusive education, community
engagement and overall contribution to school development. Only regular teachers with
minimum ten years of continuous service are eligible to submit self-nominations through an
online portal which are evaluated at the District and State/UT levels, and the final selection is
made by an independent National Jury constituted by the Ministry.From the year 2023 onwards, the award has been extended to include eminent teachers from
Higher Education Institutions/Polytechnics and Skill trainers. The guidelines of the National
Teachers’ Awards for school, for Higher Education & Polytechnics and for Excellence in
Vocational Training and Entrepreneurship Development have been placed in public domain at

(d) & (e): Education is a subject under the Concurrent List of the Constitution and promotions
(including out of turn promotions) and other service conditions of teachers fall under the
functional domain of the respective State Governments/Union Territory administrations. At
present, no proposal to grant out-of-turn promotion to award-winning teachers is under
consideration of this Ministry.
As per extant guidelines, the awardees of all the three Departments receive Rs. 50,000 cash
prize, a certificate signed by the Secretary of the concerned Department and a silver medal
weighing approx. 40 grams.
