NMMA SCHEME IN CHITRADURGA, KARNATAKA
5054. SHRI GOVIND MAKTHAPPA KARJOL:
Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state:
(a) The details of implementation of the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA)
Scheme in Chitradurga district of Karnataka since its inception;
(b) the details of the number of monuments and antiquities identified, documented and digitized
under the said Scheme in the said district;
(C) the details of the of funds allocated, sanctioned and utilized for the said district under the said
Scheme during the last five years, year-wise;
(d) the details of the steps taken by the Government for preservation, conservation and protection of
documented monuments and antiquities in the said district; and
(e) the future action plan of the Government to strengthen documentation and conservation efforts
under the said Scheme in the said district?

(a) & (b) The Government of India has established the National Mission on Monuments and
Antiquities (NMMA) in 2007 to prepare two national registers on the documentation and
digitization of unprotected monuments (Built Heritage and Sites) and antiquities across the
length and breadth of the country.
Through NMMA does not work on any district-wise documentation, 312 unprotected
monuments (Built Heritage & Sites) and 904 Antiquities in Karnataka State have been
documented under NMMA.
(c) The Question does not arise.
(d) The mandate of NMMA is to document unprotected monuments (Built Heritage & Sites) and
antiquities across the country, which does not cover conservation/ preservation. However,
centrally protected monuments are looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Monuments declared protected by State Government are looked after by respective State
Government. In addition, other monuments are looked after by involved temple committee or
trust, etc. Preservation & care of antiquities are responsibilities of concerned museums, NGO or
other organisations in charge of such antiquities.(e) NMMA conducts training programs and workshop involving State Governments,
Universities, NGOs- handling monuments and antiquities- aiming to speedup documentation
work, which is a continuous process.
