NUCLEAR ENERGY GENERATION PLANS

Will the PRIME MINISTER be pleased to state:-
(a) the current percentage contribution of nuclear energy in country’s total energy generation;
(b) whether the Government has any plan to increase the nuclear energy capacity in the coming
years and if so, the details thereof; and
(c) whether there are any plans to attract private investment in nuclear power generation and
if so, the details thereof?

(a) At present, the nuclear power contribution is about 3% to the total electricity generation
in the country.
(b) & (c) Yes. The Government has announced an ambitious Nuclear Energy mission with a
target of reaching a nuclear power capacity of 100 GW by 2047. The Government has also
announced measures for enabling R&D in SMRs and new advanced technologies. The
target is planned to be achieved by deploying reactors based on existing and new advanced
technologies under development. In this regard, the Government has initiated the
processes required for enabling large scale participation across the public and private
sectors in nuclear power.
