Parliament Question: Occupancy of seats in IITs

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION RAJYA SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1316 ANSWERED ON 11/02/2026 Occupancy of seats in IITs 1316 Shri Yerram Venkata Subba Reddy: Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state: (a) the details of MBA seats in each IIT, IIT-wise and number of seats not filled during the last five years, year-wise and IIT-wise; (b) whether it is a fact that IITs are not able to fill in MBA seats in its institutions; (c) whether it is also a fact that on an average, 30 per cent MBA seats remained vacant in various IITs; (d) if so, the reasons therefor; and (e) the reasons, if any, that students are not interested to join MBA programme in IITs? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (DR. SUKANTA MAJUMDAR) (a) to (e): The National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 focuses on strengthening the existing educational institutions by improving their basic structures, governance and resources. NEP 2020 also recommends establishment of Multi-disciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU) as model public institutions to set the highest standards in education and research. The INIs (Institutes of National Importance) setup by the Central Government are realizing the vision of NEP 2020 and implementing flexible educational programmes, promoting holistic, multi-disciplinary education integrating science and engineering with management and economics. The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are India’s premier technology and engineering institutes with high national rankings and rigorous standards. In line with the vision of NEP 2020, currently 11 IITs are offering MBA programmes in their Institute. Admission to MBA programmes at various IITs is a competitive, multi stage process andincludes the past academic performance, work experience, and profile parameters such as academic background and sometimes additional achievements, and offers are made within the capacity of that institute and programme for that academic year. The number of MBA seats at IITs depends on several factors such as the institute’s intake capacity and sanctioned strength, availability of qualified faculty and infrastructure, regulatory norms as well as specific seat distributions decided by each IIT’s senate and Board of Governors for different MBA specialisations. *****
