**Summary:**
This document, issued by the Department of Atomic Energy, provides an update on the status of nuclear power plants in India as of August 6, 2025.
Currently, India has an installed nuclear power capacity of 8780 MW, comprising 24 reactors (excluding RAPS1 100 MW, which is under long-term shutdown). Four reactors (Tarapur 1&2, Madras 1, and Kaiga 1) are undergoing refurbishment and upgradation, while the remaining 20 are operational.
Several projects are under construction: Rawatbhata (RAPP 8 - 700 MW), Kudankulam (KKNPP 3&4 - 2000 MW each, and KKNPP 5&6 - 2000 MW each), Kalpakkam (PFBR - 500 MW), and Gorakhpur (GHAVP 1&2 - 1400 MW). Projects under pre-project activities include Kaiga (Kaiga 5&6 - 1400 MW), Gorakhpur (GHAVP 3&4 - 1400 MW), Chutka (Chutka 1&2 - 1400 MW) and Mahi Banswara (Units 1&2 and 3&4 - 2800 MW).
The installed nuclear power capacity is projected to reach 22,380 MW by 2032 upon completion of these projects.
The Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Maharashtra has four reactors. Units 3&4 are currently operating, while Units 1&2 (totaling 320 MW) are undergoing refurbishment and upgradation, with restart contingent upon regulatory clearance.
The Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Project in Rajasthan, with a planned capacity of 2800 MW (Units 1&2 and 3&4, 1400 MW each), has completed land acquisition and obtained statutory environmental clearance and siting consent. Pre-project activities are currently underway.

(a) the total number of nuclear power plants operational in the country and total capacity
thereof;
(b) the details of the projects which are under the various stages of construction;
(c) the total installed capacity (in MW) which is envisaged to reach after the completion of the
above projects;
(d) whether it is a fact that the Tarapur Atomic Power Station in Palghar district in Maharashtra
is facing operational challenges and delays, particularly with its reactors undergoing
refurbishment and if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the present status of the proposed nuclear power plant in Banswara district of Rajasthan
along with the total capacity thereof?

(a) Presently, the installed nuclear power capacity in the country comprises of 24 reactors with
a total capacity of 8780 MW, excluding RAPS-1 (100 MW), which is under long term shut
down. Among these 24 reactors, 4 nos. of reactors i.e., Tarapur Atomic Power Station
Units-1&2 (2 x 160 MW), Madras Atomic Power Station Unit-1 (1x220 MW) and Kaiga
Atomic Power Station Unit-1 (1x220 MW) are presently in project mode for carrying out
refurbishment & upgradation activities and remaining 20 reactors are operational.(b) The details are given below:

(c) With progressive completion of the projects under implementation, the installed nuclear
power capacity is expected to reach 22,380 MW by 2032.
(d) There are four reactors Units-1&2 (2 x 160 MW) and Units-3&4 (2 x 540 MW) at Tarapur,
Maharashtra. Presently, Units-3&4 are operating while Units-1&2 (2 x 160 MW) are
undergoing refurbishment and upgradation. On completion of these activities Units-1&2,
will be restarted in line with regulatory clearance.
(e) The Mahi Banswara Nuclear Power Project with a total capacity of 2800 MW comprises
of Units 1&2 (2x700 MW) and Units 3&4 (2x700 MW). Land has been acquired, statutory
environment clearance from MoEFCC and siting consent from AERB have been obtained.
Presently, pre-project activities are in progress at the site.
