PATENTS FILED AND GRANTED TO PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR
HIGHER EUDCATION INSTITUTIONS
2456. SHRI JAVED ALI KHAN:
Will the Minister of Commerce and Industry be pleased to state:
(a) the total number of patents filed and patents granted to public sector higher education
institutions, Central Universities, IITs, NITs, IISc, IISERs, etc, and private sector higher
education institutions, deemed universities, private universities and private colleges
respectively during 2020-21 to 2025-26, year-wise and category-wise break-up; and
(b) the share of patents granted to private Higher Educational Institutions as a percentage of
the total patents granted to all Higher Educational Institutions in India during the said
period, year-wise?

(a) & (b): The data relating to patent filings and grants is maintained by IP office under the
Educational Institute category and separate classification for public institutions, private
institutions, central universities, IITs, NITs etc. are not maintained in the database.
Further the category of Educational Institution as an applicant was introduced through
the Patents (Amendment) Rules, 2021, and prior to this such institutions may have filed
applications under the “Other than Natural Person (ONP)” category. The year-wise
number of patent applications filed and granted under the Educational Institute
applicant category during the period 2020- 21 to 2025-26 (upto 02.03.2026) are
provided below:-
