PEDESTRIAN FATALITIES ON NHs

be pleased to state:
(a) whether the Government has taken note of reports indicating
that nearly thirty per cent of pedestrian fatalities in the country
occur on National Highways (NHs) and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Government has assessed the number of pedestrian
deaths and accidents reported on National Highways passing
through Tamil Nadu during the last three years and the current year
and if so, the details thereof;
(c) the details of accident-prone stretches and black spots
identified on National Highways in Tamil Nadu including those in
Ramanathapuram district and the action taken for their
rectification; and
(d) whether any proposals have been approved for the construction
of foot overbridges, pedestrian underpasses, service roads, street
lighting, traffic calming measures and other pedestrian safety
infrastructure on National Highways in Ramanathapuram district
and if so, the details thereof?

(a) Government publishes report on “Road Accidents in India” based
on data received from States/ UTs. Based on the data available with
the Government, the details of the total number of pedestrian killedin road accidents on all categories of roads and National Highways
during the year 2024 are as under:

(b) The details of pedestrian road accidents and pedestrian deaths
on National Highways in Tamil Nadu during 2023 to 2025 and 2026
(upto 23.07.2026) are as under:

(c) and (d) A total of 1,470 Black Spots have been identified on
various stretches of National Highways under the jurisdiction of the
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the State during the
series from 2011-14 to 2020-22. Short-term rectification measures
have been completed on all the identified Black Spots. Long-term
rectification measures have been completed on 580 Black Spots
and approved for another 310 Black Spots out of the identified 1,090
Black Spots,
Further, a total of 246 blackspots on National Highways under the
jurisdiction of State National Highways Wing of Tamil Nadu have
been identified under four blackspot series ranging from 2016-18 to
2020-22. Short term measures have been completed on all 246
blackspots. The long-term measures have been carried out and
completed at 152 blackspot locations under Annual Plan works and
Road safety plan works.
In Ramanathapuram district, 10 blackspots have been identified on
National Highways pertaining to NHAI and 16 blackspots onNational Highways pertaining to State National Highways wing,for
which the rectification measures of Junction Improvements,
Construction of Flyovers, Widening the existing stretch including
safety measures, etc. have been approved.
In NH-87 (Madurai-Dhanushkodi Road), 11 Black Spots identified
during the 2016-2018 and 2020-22 have been permanently rectified.
Further, Short-term rectification works including traffic calming
measures for 05 Blackspots and another 15 Hotspots on NH-32 have
been approved by NHAI.
Details of blackspots identified on various National Highways
stretches falling in Ramanathapuram District along with the action
taken for rectification of the same are detailed at Annexure.Annexure
