Parliament Question: Pollution caused by KRIBHCO in Shahjahanpur

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 1275 TO BE ANSWERED ON 27.07.2026 Pollution caused by KRIBHCO in Shahjahanpur 1275. SHRI ARUN KUMAR SAGAR: Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to state: (a) whether the unutilized water/waste of chemical company KRIBHCO located in Shahjahanpur Parliamentary Constituency of Uttar Pradesh is polluting the area, causing various diseases and rendering cultivable land useless; (b) if so, the details thereof; (c) whether the Government has taken/proposes to take any steps to free the said Constituency from pollution; and (d) if so, the details thereof? ANSWER MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE (SHRI KIRTI VARDHAN SINGH) (a) to (d): As per the information provided by Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), water and air polluting industries in Shahjahanpur are inspected from time to time. Action is taken against the polluting units found non-complying during inspection under the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. Further, the Shahjahanpur Parliamentary Constituency of Uttar Pradesh is located within the Ganga River basin. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) organizes annual inspection of Grossly Polluting Industries (GPIs) including Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) operating in river Ganga main stem States having potential to discharge into river Ganga & its tributaries by joint teams of officials from third party technical institutes and SPCBs/PCC since 2017. In cases of non-compliance found during inspections, appropriate actions such as issue of Show Cause Notice & Closure direction and imposition of Environmental Compensation are issued under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. CPCB authorised third party technical institute, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, inspected the industry on 23.08.2025. During the inspection, the industry was found complying w.r.t. notified discharge standards. As per the report received from Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), KRIBHCO Fertilizers Ltd., Shahjahanpur has installed Effluent treatment plant of 200 m3/hour for treatment of effluent generated from industrial processes. A joint inspection of this industry was conducted during 04.12.2024 and 05.12.2024 by the UPPCB, the district administration and CPCB. Latestinspection of the unit has been done by Regional office, UPPCB, Bareilly on 19.02.2026 and in all above inspections it was observed that no effluent was being discharged outside the premises, the unit was found to be in operation in compliance of prescribed norms and there is no evidence to suggest that the unit's operations have caused the spread of any disease or rendered agricultural land unfit for use. ***
